Simple Practices to Plant the Seeds of Gratitude

Simple Practices to Plant the Seeds of Gratitude

As I walked home from teaching a yoga class this morning, it was raining. Not a downpour kind of a rain but a nice light shower. The sun was slightly peeking behind the clouds. The temperature—not to hot, not too cold—was just right. There was no wind. And you know what…it felt lovely. It was deliciously divine. It felt like a cleansing shower from mother nature.

Suddenly, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. As I was showered with the abundance of nature, I was suddenly drenched in a moment of gratitude. Sometimes with the busyness of life, we tend to overlook the beautiful things that are all around us. And, I believe these little things are very important. So I thought I would share a few simple reminders on how to incorporate an attitude of gratitude on a daily basis.

Begin with a Grateful Heart

I believe we should start our day positively and what better way to get it started than with being thankful? Before you begin your daily journey, take a few seconds to practice being grateful for all the blessings in your life. Maybe you are grateful for the gift of sight. Maybe for the breath you breathe or maybe for just simply being alive. I believe we benefit from the simplicity of being thankful.

Before beginning your day, sit tall in bed. Place one hand on your belly and the other hand on your heart. Close your eyes. Take five deep, cleansing breaths. Enjoy it and then say thank you for the breaths you are breathing. Then recognize three more blessings in your life and then be thankful for these beautiful miracles.

That’s it. It’s that simple.

Random Acts of Kindness

A small gesture of being kind to someone can make someone else’s day a special day. It fills their heart with happiness, appreciation and gratitude. Try practicing being kind to someone you know or you don’t know for no reason at all and expect nothing back in return. A simple gesture of kindness can go a long way and in the process makes for a happy day.

Here are a few simple acts of kindness to try out:

• Give someone a hug

• Tell someone you love that you love them

• Buy the dude behind you at Starbucks a coffee

• Put a coin in an expired meter

• Send a friend a quick hello or maybe flowers

• Say “please” and “thank you” and really mean it

• Don’t interrupt when someone is talking… listen

• Simply say “sorry” when you’re wrong.

Practice, practice, practice being kind often. It’s a way of living. Have appreciation for all the things and people we meet along our path, and acknowledge what a  blessing each day is. Expression of loving kindness is a necessary requirement to a life of happiness, joy and peace and in this process creates a life filled with more meaning.

End Each Day with Gratitude

Close the chapter of your day with a gratitude journal. A gratitude journal is a diary in which you record all the good events that happen in your life that day.  Before residing to a night of rest, practice being thankful for five great things that happened throughout the day by reciting it to pen and paper. Here’s an example:

I am grateful for …………….. because……………………

Pondering on all the good stuff that presents itself in your life and then jotting it down has a very positive effect on one’s life. Studies have shown that practicing gratitude improves our overall happiness and well-being.

Joy is the outcome of recognizing the beauty the surrounds us. We are so blessed with all that we have…. all we need to do is just recognize this. Gratitude rids the body and mind from all the toxic stuff like anger, depression, sadness and so forth. Planting a seed of gratitude daily roots us so we can grow love, abundance and recognition of a life that is filled with beauty.

Appreciate more…. stress less.
