Spectactular IceLand

Spectactular IceLand

So i recently went on an adventure of a life time. Finally !! Haha ! I went on a 7 day tour of IceLand. It was incredible. The view and nature was outstanding. Words or photos cannot describe the amazingness  of this place. You need to experience it yourself. You need to be there amidst the fresh air and take it all in. I realized this passed year that life is short and such a gamble. Now a days you don’t know where or what will have happened in the next year from now so it is so important to live freely in this now and do what you need to do for YOURSELF so you can be happy and live your life to the fullest!! As a mom … I felt guilt arise when this trip was offered to me and didn’t feel I should leave my family alone for a week. I wanted to be there for them and I was thinking of turning this opportunity down and would stay home for the sake of others. But, as some of you know, having suffered a scare regarding Melanoma and not knowing if I would be here next year… I decided to go with the flow and focus on me. If you are not happy…. the people around you can sense you are not happy. If you are resentful… your energy effects the people around you. If you are sad… the peeps around you soaks in the sadness. So what I am saying is… do a little something for YOU once in a blue. This was a reward...

For 3 consectutive weeks, I offered FREE outdoor yoga to live music to the folks of Niagara and it was a great success. Last week alone, 65 Yogi’s showed up on their mat to practice Yoga outdoors. The FREE Outdoor Yoga community event  was a huge success. The vibe was amazing, the music fantastic and mother nature co-operated. Simple Practices to Plant the Seeds of Gratitude

Simple Practices to Plant the Seeds of Gratitude

As I walked home from teaching a yoga class this morning, it was raining. Not a downpour kind of a rain but a nice light shower. The sun was slightly peeking behind the clouds. The temperature—not to hot, not too cold—was just right. There was no wind. And you know what…it felt lovely. It was deliciously divine. It felt like a cleansing shower from mother nature. Suddenly, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. As I was showered with the abundance of nature, I was suddenly drenched in a moment of gratitude. Sometimes with the busyness of life, we tend to overlook the beautiful things that are all around us. And, I believe these little things are very important. So I thought I would share a few simple reminders on how to incorporate an attitude of gratitude on a daily basis. Begin with a Grateful Heart I believe we should start our day positively and what better way to get it started than with being thankful? Before you begin your daily journey, take a few seconds to practice being grateful for all the blessings in your life. Maybe you are grateful for the gift of sight. Maybe for the breath you breathe or maybe for just simply being alive. I believe we benefit from the simplicity of being thankful. Before beginning your day, sit tall in bed. Place one hand on your belly and the other hand on your heart. Close your eyes. Take five deep, cleansing breaths. Enjoy it and then say thank you for the breaths you are breathing. Then recognize three more blessings in your life and then be thankful...

5 Actions for Living Your Happiest Life

5 Actions for Living Your Happiest Life

What inspires you? What makes you come alive? In your mind’s eye, where do you picture yourself two years from now? What do you want to accomplish or obtain down your path of life? Are you happy the way you are, as you are, or do you need to change in order to follow your dream or heart’s desire? Not following your dreams and realizing it can stir up stress, disappointment and sadness. Changing the way we think and refocusing ourselves will help us achieve and receive our wishes, just like a dream come true. Now is a great time to start pursuing and start believing we can and we will. We all want a life filled with happiness. And what better way to find a happy heart then to allow your dreams to become a reality? 1. Have a Grateful Heart Having a grateful heart for all the beauty that exists around us is a practice we should all bring into our daily lives. We are surrounded with so much abundance. Appreciating all that we have will allow our egos to step aside, which invites more abundance into our lives. Action: Greet each moment of your day with a grateful heart and allow the spirit of gratitude to transform your world. 2. Positive Intentions We have an amazing ability to create the lives of our dreams—all we have to do is believe in the miracle that lies within. Ask and you shall receive. You need to believe to achieve, so doubt your doubts and create by thought, by saying, and by visualizing your passion becoming a reality. Action: Begin each day with positive intentions...
The Healing Power of Yoga

The Healing Power of Yoga

Sixteen years ago, my nephew, who is now 16 years old, was diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening disease called Hunter Syndrome (Mucopolysaccharidosis Type II). It’s a condition that affects the skeletal and muscular systems and can cause dwarfism, enlarged organs, lack of walking and talking, living life from a G-tube and a reduced life span. After hearing this, my life suddenly came to a halt. I felt my heart literally break and in this process my life changed significantly. Until then, I didn’t think that anything like this could present itself in my life. This was a traumatic situation and a rude awakening that affected our family drastically. I was physically and emotionally affected from this life-changing experience. The feeling of being happy was gone. I became very depressed for many months to follow knowing that a small child—my own flesh and blood—had a horrific disease with no cure. Life sucked for me at that moment and I couldn’t spark a smile for months to follow. We literally take life for granted and then suddenly something so tragic lands on your door step. I became angry, sad, confused, pissed off, depressed… so many emotions intertwined into the fabric of my being. Then… I met yoga. Having a background of several years in the fitness industry, I thought what the hey…. lets add another certification under my belt. And so, I began my adventure into the yoga world. I was automatically drawn to this yoga thing. There was something magical and special about it. As I began to tap deeper into the yogic lifestyle, I started to accept things more gracefully and I began my...
Meditation for Inner Peace and Calm

Meditation for Inner Peace and Calm

Most of us live fast-paced lives, juggling work, family and social obligations. In this process, we become stressed, anxious and we live our lives out of balance. Meditation is a great discipline to bring into your everyday life to restore balance and free yourself from the hustle and bustle of this Western way of being.  Peaceful, calm living is the result. What is Meditation? Meditation is a state of deep peace that occurs when the mind is calm and silent. With a regular meditation practice, we begin to connect on a spiritual, mental and emotional level resulting in a life filled with peacefulness, calmness and mental clarity. So how can you start a meditation practice? Take a time out from whatever is occupying you. Find a quiet place to sit tall in a comfortable position and just be present in this moment. Scan your body for any tension and begin to release and let go. You don’t need to do much of anything. Just step away from all the external stimuli in your life, and bring yourself back to a state of mental clarity. Tame your mind and in this process you will create a sensation of peace. Breathe Once you quiet your mind, begin to observe your breath. As you breathe, sit tall with a spine that is long and erect, the musculature soft and supple. Close your eyes. Notice if there’s hesitation in your breath cycles. If so, hold no judgement. Just sit with your breath until it becomes more tranquil and easy. As you breathe in, with your inside voice, say 1 and as you exhale, quietly say 2. Continue to count...
Path to Peace: 6 Simple Tips to Live in the Present

Path to Peace: 6 Simple Tips to Live in the Present

What does it mean to be present? Being present is simply being, or existing, in this very moment. Living in the moment will create a life that is filled with calmness and peace; we all want a life filled with peace, but in today’s day and age, life can become swamped. Trying to balance work life and being a parent, among other things, can be overwhelming. So how can you bring yourself back to a simpler way of living so that you can enjoy a life filled with peace? 1. Breath. When things get a little stressful, try stepping away from all the external stimuli in your life and find a few moments in stillness to watch your breath. Watching your breath will allow you to be in the present moment; the nervous system calms down so you can take on the rest of your day in a calmer manner. Taking slow, deep, long breaths will help tame your agitated mind and create freedom within. So stop, clear your mind and watch yourself breathe. 2. Yoga. Incorporating yoga into your daily routine is a great way to bring yourself back to the present moment. Yoga is a mindful practice which allows one to slow down from their regular routine and become present in the here and now. So grab a mat and indulge in a little bit of “me time”. 3. Meditate. Meditation is a great way to connect to the present. Commit to a daily practice to sit quietly and just be. Let go of thoughts about the past and try not to think of the future. Challenge yourself to be here in the now. Take that...
Ride on the Side Crane Train

Ride on the Side Crane Train

Yoga has so many awesome benefits, from getting a strong and lean body, to finding inner peace, to connecting on a physical, mental and spiritual level. But, along this path to freedom is the practice or discipline of the asanas. The postures are a journey to the soul. And this journey to the soul is a place where we ignite the inner light found within. Arm balances can be intimidating when you first begin to progress forward in your asana practice. They are not for everyone but for those who have a more physical approach to their practice. Arm balances help to build confidence, self esteem, strength and power. It teaches one to stay calm within when things get challenging on their mat, and it allows one to approach things in a more calmer, focused manner. The pose I chose to share with you is the Side Crane Pose also known as Parsva Bakasana. There is so much happening in this pose. It’s an arm balance which creates strength in your upper body and core. It’s a twisting pose that helps ring and twist out all the stuff we hang onto in our physical body. It creates flexibility so you get that long and lean yoga body physique. And it involves opening your mind to the possibilities on your mat with a playful approach. Remember those fearless days as a child leaping effortlessly into a cartwheel without any thought or apprehension? Try to bring yourself back to those moments of freedom, of letting loose and just doing. We need to bring that childplay sensation back into our adulthood and just go with the flow and see what...
4 Ways to Spring Clean from the Inside Out

4 Ways to Spring Clean from the Inside Out

Spring is finally here. The grass is getting greener, the days longer and brighter and the weather is getting warmer. This change in season is the perfect time to reawaken and rejuvenate from a long winter of hibernating indoors.  This is a perfect time to bring back freshness into every aspect of your life. So let’s spring it on to a better way of living by clearing away all the clutter that no longer serves you and cleaning house from the inside out. Below is a list of suggestions to get you back on track to living with a clean, cleared slate. 1. Make a To-Do List A to-do-list is a list of tasks that need to be carried out. Making a list and following through with it will keep you organized and allow you to feel less anxious. Each time you begin to scratch away one more thing off your list, you will feel more organized, less stressed and you will bring more calmness into your state of being.   That feeling of being overwhelmed begins to dissipate and dissolve away. 2. De-clutter An accumulation of clutter or chaos in the home can increase stress levels and may create a feeling of overwhelm in our daily routine and life. Tackling your to-do-list in small baby steps can lead to calmness and peace once again. We become stressed with an environment that is cluttered and in disarray. House clutter is a visible manifestation of procrastination. Being disorganized in the home is a  daily reminder of disorganization and it can continue to eat away at us. So unleash all the accumulated clutter in your home.  Open...

Fly Low in Baby Crow

Are you at that point of the game in your yoga practice where you need to pump up your edge a bit? Do you need to stoke your internal fire and begin to be a bit more playful on your mat? Well, why not fly low in Baby Crow?  Baby Crow or Karandavasana (Duck Pose) is a great pose to honor those moments of small beginnings. Not only is it the most adorable looking pose, it’s a low to the ground arm balance that involves core and upper body strength. It allows you to draw your attention inwardly by being present and heck, it’s fun to spice up your practice. So sit tight and enjoy the ride as you leap and take flight in Baby Crow! Here’s a few prep poses to get your crow off the ground. Enjoy these fun moments of small beginnings as you take flight and leap forward playfully. Start  with a few rounds of your favorite Sun Salutations to warm the body up. Once you’ve warmed the body, cleared the mind and found a smooth rhythmic breath, find Downward Facing Dog Pose. 1. Dolphin Plank From Downward Dog, hinge forward until you come into a Plank Pose position where your shoulders are directly over your wrists and there’s a straight line of energy from the back of your skull to the back of your heels. From here, bend your elbows and place them on your mat one at a time as you come into Dolphin Plank or Forearm Plank. Your elbow are directly under your shoulders, thighs are engaged and the belly drawing in and up firmly.  As you hold...
The Power of Love

The Power of Love

February is the month of LOVE – a time to show your appreciation to the loved ones in your life. It can be a challenge juggling the busy lives that we lead. We may get caught up in our regular routines with family, work or just life in general, and we (including myself) may sometimes forget about the loved ones in our lives we take for granted. Now is the perfect time to stop and show a little bit of love, compassion and kindness to all the people around you that make your life what it is today. So step back from all the chaos on your to do list, get on a path to realizing that love is all around you, and make a commitment to appreciate it more often. How about  taking this practice into each and every aspect of your life? Expression of love is the key element to inner peace. Break open your heart that is filled with that goodness and let it pour forth. Here are 3 tips to help you get back to living a life filled with peace through love. 1. Practice Loving Kindness Loving Kindness, also known as metta, begins at your home and your inner belief system. It comes from the root of your being; it starts with perceiving obstacles in your life in a manner of compassion, and making this practice not just a once a year commitment. Showing simple acts of affections through hugging, a small gesture of placing your arm around someone, a pat on the back or even a smile can generate good feelings of being loved.  Can you commit to being...
Breath for Stress

Breath for Stress

With the holiday hustle and bustle, shopping, parties and the over indulgence of food and cocktails, the holiday season can be an overwhelming and a stressful time for many of us. This is the prime time to come face to face with the obstacles of stress and a perfect opportunity to bring your yoga practice into your life. Finding time to create a little bit of me time in stillness, along with breath, can keep you in a tranquil state of being. Mind silence can do wonders for us during the busiest season of our calendar, so here is a breath technique you can take with you anytime and anywhere when you feel you need to take a few moments out of your day to reconnect and recharge your mind and body. Here’s how to do it: Sit comfortably with an upright spine. Scan your body of any tension and notice where you hang on to your tension and then allow yourself to release it. Find stillness within. Once you center yourself in this moment… 1. Allow yourself to take a deep breath in through your nose for a count of four. 2. Hold your breath for seven counts as if you were holding your breath underwater and stay calm while retaining your breath inwards. 3. Slowly and completely exhale all the air out through the mouth for a count of eight. Allow any hint of tension in your shoulders, chest, face or where ever you hold on to tension in your physical body to release, to dissolve away, leaving you free of any tension, bringing balance back into your state of...

Appreciate the smaller things

Appreciate the smaller things

It’s so easy to just say those words, “appreciate the smaller things.” Sometime we get caught up in the ebb and flow of life’s expectations and we forget to take some time to dwell in the moment of gratitude for all the smaller things that make your life what it is today. So this is my experience…while rushing around trying to get all my chores done, in the background I heard the faint sound of a child (my daughter) playing quietly with herself, enthralled in the moment. I stopped—and just listened. That innocent sound of a child in her moment of enjoyment made me stop, and take in the goodness of what was happening in that moment. I felt uplifted and I began to smile and quietly offered a moment of gratitude for experiencing such a beautiful thing. I thought I would share this experience with you, so you too can experience a moment of gratitude for the things we take for granted on a daily basis. Here are a couple of tips on how to appreciate the present moment and exist in the now: 1. Take it outdoors! Take a walk, run or take it outside and lie down and gaze upwards to the sky. Soak in the goodness of mother nature. Experience the wind blowing in your hair, the sun warming your soul and just listen to the beauty that is all around you.  Hear the sounds of birds, the bees, the planes in the sky above. Then, with your inside voice, practice saying something positive about the moment you are experiencing right here, right now! 2....
